HOW TO: Overcome Gym Intimidation

Going to the gym is not as easy as it seems at times, especially when you are in the beginning of your fitness journey. I’m here to help you overcome your feelings of overwhelm, anxiety and intimidation so you can become your strongest, fittest and most confident self.

Here are a couple tips to rock up to the gym and be the fit queen you are meant to be:

working on your mindset

This is the most important step that you’ll have to take, as without the right mindset you won’t even get inside the gym. Accepting that it is normal to feel uncomfortable in a new situation is the key. You are - after all - stepping outside your comfort zone and doing something you’ve never done before.

Think about it this way… You are already winning by deciding that you want to make a change and become healthy and fit. You will be going to the gym with the goal of working on yourself and getting your dream body, just like everyone else who is there. However, if you constantly worry about what people around you think and let that overpower you, you will hold yourself back from reaching your full potential. If it helps, put a baseball cap on and plug some noise cancelling earphones in and pretend that you are there alone.

The harsh reality is that no one actually cares about you in there, as they are there to work on them, not to judge you. Everyone has their own problems and thoughts, so if you catch someone looking or glancing at you, know that they are probably just zoning out and thinking about their days.

Plan out your workouts

If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. Going into the gym without knowing what to do will make things really confusing and overwhelming. So, having a plan will help tremendously - even if you don’t follow it perfectly in the end.

Choose a focus for your session, like arms, upper body, legs, full body, etc. and then select 3-5 exercises that you will repeat for 2-4 sets. Keep it simple! You don’t need to make it complicated by doing all the exercises on all the machines. Stick to the basics and make it easier for yourself.

If you don’t want to have to think about your plan or what to do, I’d be more than happy to help you out with it. All you have to do is hit this link and book a FREE Discovery Call so I can take the thinking out of it for you: https://calendly.com/coachedbyhajni/discovery-call-hajni

Go at off-peak times

There will be times of the day when the gym is going to be a bit more quiet than usual. This is the best time for you to get in there at the beginning of your journey so you can get more comfortable with the environment and complete your workouts without any distractions or having to wait for machines. Most gyms have apps now, that will show you how many people are in the gym at any given time, so do your research and try to go at those periods.

Remember, you don’t have to go 0-100 overnight and getting into working out in a gym confidently comes with practice. Start small, take it one step at a time, and you will overcome gym intimidation in no time.
